Suicide Note

I have now had the chance to read the letter that is being circulated within the village by opponents of the proposed travellers site at Oak Meadow. This anonymous document contains not one argument for opposing the site on planning grounds, but is instead a rant against the new owners of the site on the grounds of their lifestyle. If this document is not legally actionable it must come very close to being so.

The position of this blog on the matter is clear. The blog opposed the establishment of the site at Oak Meadow on grounds of access to the site and broadly supports the objections to the site put forward by Derek and Lesley Vanstone in their submission to Mid Devon District Council. This blog was also concerned because, as in other matters, it seemed that a planning application was being rushed through with inadequate public consultation. What the blog will not be supporting is a witch hunt against the new owners of the site on the grounds of their percieved lifestyle, or views on the legalisation of drugs, particularly when such a document is being circulated by people without the guts to put their names to the views that they are expressing. This letter makes no contribution to the debate over this issue and should be withdrawn immediately. Anyone recieving this poisonous garbage should consign it to its rightful place.

in the bin.

Hear, hear! Fortunately, most reasonable people in the village will see the letter as a desperate attempt to slur the name of the applicant and will, as you suggest, consign it to its rightful place, in the recycling (hopefully).
For the opponents of the application, this letter can only be a setback more likely to garner sympathy for the applicant, one would hope.
As you rightly say, if there are good planning grounds for refusing the application, so be it.
The hysterical letter reflects badly on its anonymous authors.
Perhaps they should come clean, own up to their authorship and apologise... some hope!

What a pity the travellers didn't buy the land in Fore Street opposite the Silverton Inn. A couple of yurts there would be an improvement on the eyesore scrapyard. Incidentally, does the scrapyard have planning permission?

I received a copy of the letter last night. It's unlikely to be taken seriously by anyone with a modicum of commonsense. Apart from the scurrilous accusations which detract from any planning considerations, it's only semi-literate.
I agree with 'Planning cynic' above, the derelict land that has become an eyesore in the centre of "our beautiful village" is of greater concern.

Amongst all the furore concerning our (possible) new neighbours, I wonder if anyone has considered the enormous workload soon to be placed on the broad shoulders of Mid Devon’s Planners. Short of travelling to Outer Mongolia to see for themselves, where do the Planners find the Building Regs. for a yurt ? All the other residents of "our beautiful village" have to comply with Building Regulations for the extensions and alterations to their property. What about yurt builders ?

I believe that these Travellers should be able to settle in the village.
Who are we to say can or can't buy land and live how they please.
Anyone in this village that has bought a house does exactly that.
The vast majority of Travellers are good decent people with only a handful that ruin it for all the rest.
I think it very unfair of the bigots in this village that aren't prepared to give these people a chance.
As for the letter in question, whoever wrote it must be really concerned that the value of they're home is really going to go down because of the Travellers or that Travellers are'nt posh enough to live in this village. How bloody sad.
It will come out at some point who wrote this letter, and hopefully show them in they're true light.
Bring on the Travellers.

The names of those behind this crass letter seem to be well known in the village. It's a pity, given they do have internet access and are aware of the comment on this blog, they haven't owned up to it and apologised. That's one of their consciences, I suppose.
