Hall site pt 96

The owner of the bus on the old hall site, Mr R. Vanneck, says he has squatters rights on the site as he has been using it for ten years.

It appears to depend on whether or not the site is registered land. If it is, he can give notice of his "squater's rights" after ten years but the owner can then move to evict him. It would seem that, if the land is unregistered, he has an opportunity to claim the land after twelve years. But in each case, only if his occupation of the land has been unbroken for all of that time. I'm no lawyer, just picked this up from the internet.

Nice one, BB. Having not been here for the entire ten/twelve years I dont know the ins and outs but I seem to remember that the land was cleared for a number of street markets

Are we sure that Mr Vanneck is really a squatter as he claims ?

Verse 3 of “Waltzing Matilda” tells us:

“Up rode the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred”.

I always thought squatters had to be mounted on thoroughbreds when they appeared in public. I can’t remember ever seeing him mounted on anything - not even a bicycle !

But perhaps others have done so , and I missed it. Maybe they could enlighten us.

rumour has it a load of worn out hippies from Totnes are moving onto the site and are going to 'bare arms' like 'The Montana Militia' and repel all boarders. peace, love, soya beans, etc, etc...

I heard the same hippies are gonna take over the old Londis store and make it into their marijuna patch to sell to hippies all over devon and try and make enough money to buy haggett out and make hash cakes mmmmmm caketastic!!!

On a more serious note, isn’t it an absolute disgrace that this site has been left empty for so long, and allowed to become a tip in the centre of our village ? Why has it not been developed ?

Tobireg has written about the lack of one-bedroom properties in our village before. Why not compulsory purchase the land and develop it for this purpose ? You could get quite a few one-bedroomed units, suitable for single people, on this site.

actually Mr Vanneck has been seen many a time upon a push bike, even with my own eyes and what a sight that was!

Having spoken to Mr vanneck, seeming to be the only one that has,he assures me he has never or has any intention of claiming squatters rights. What he said was from a planning point of view as he has occupied the site for over 10 years there is nothing that can be done regaurding planning permission, but what business is it of anyones other than the land owner!!!
Mr Vanneck also informs me that whatever he does on the site it is never a permanency and as a reply to " tobireg" comment yes he did tidy the site for the benifit of the street market.

With reference to Tobireg’s EYESORE post on Thursday 30 October, Babyblox said that the matter (the state of the old village hall site) would be raised at the Parish Council meeting on Monday 3 November. Whilst one cannot expect to have the November meeting’s minutes out yet, it would be reasonable to expect that the October meeting’s minutes would be online by now.

In fact, Bob Vanneck informed me the other day that he considers he has squatters rights, but there again, some of us are well aquainted with his very individual sense of humour.

Whatever the case the essential need is that this site is put to some good use. the suggestion by Tico for compulsory purchase for social housing is a very practical one given the times we are in.

May i suggest that the need for 1 bedroomed housing is easily resolved.Has Haggett not got 3 sheds he'd like to offload for a fee of course.
Perhaps a culpulsary purchase order could be put on these to releive the shortage, for a token payment.
Maybe then we could all see how he benefits this village

Hagget does not own the houses behind the butchers. he sold the land to property developers. why wont this village leave him alone. ill tell you why, its because everyone is jealous he made a success out of nothing and anyone who disagrees is the kind of person who cant be bothered to think of anything innovative other than to whinge and whine on blog sites!!!!!!!!

Hagget deserves everything he gets.
Look how he pushed his prices up when the Londis closed.
He's a greedy self centered man.
It's good to see that the new people in Cabbages and kings arent greedy and keep theyre prices realistic.
What will he do next, put a pub on the Londis site?

DH had a monopoly once the Londis closed and did what businesspeople always do in a monopoly situation, he exploited his position, thats the way the system works. Now he has competition again things may change, but I hear rumours that he may not be here much longer anyway and that the shop may be in other hands before long.

Rico, the October minutes are on the noticeboard and on the website but there is a typo in the date. November's will follow shortly.

Dave has sold up!! heard it with my own ears.... I'll miss him, good business man, and very supportive to the young community of Silverton.
I hear the new owner already has 53 Spar shops... thats greedy!
