New Hate Figure Needed

Now that Dave Haggett has sold up the village will be needing a new 'man you love to hate'. There always is one. Perhaps we should have a poll to see who gets the position this time.

Nominations for the blogger will be excluded, naturally.

I would like to nominate, individually or collectively, the member/s of the Parish Council who seek to re-introduce the speed “cushions” / speed bumps / speed humps / sleeping policemen in our village.

Couldn't agree more !

I'd loike to nominate that 'Northern Monkey Dave' that drinks/drank in the Silverton Inn, if ever i met someone that does my head in it's him and his troublesome 'family'. It would seem they are moving (being turfed out more loike!!) to pastures new before christmas, God help Crediton !

I agree with Ken. That family sould be sent to the moon (that's being polite, I could think of more appropriate areas to place them but don't want to be too rude). They are all as bad as each other, and fantastic news that they are moving, The whole village should have a street party to celebrate when we're rid of thoughs gross people!!!!

Its all very well getting people kicked out of the village, the problem is you never know what wil replace them.

Sad to haer that the parish council has upset all the back sufferers. How would they advocate slowing the boy racers in the village?

I would imagine anyone who moves in to inhabit the house the 'Northern Primate' vacates will hopefully be a vast improvement, either way i tink it's a no loose situation ! I fer one have never had a problem with the speed bumps which were along School Road, they are now gone since resurfacing has taken place and if they return they might slow vehicles down a bit. How about we all get together and start taking pot shots at the CHAVS/Boy&Gurl racers as they speed thru the village.... ?

Sounds good ken. I think we could all congregate on the rec and take turns!! Im first!!

Babyblox, I would suggest that the Parish Council targets the offenders, not everyone willy-nilly. How about this: firstly, declare ALL of Silverton a 20 mph area and then send in (at random times) a PCSO with a hand held speed camera. That way the speeders would be punished with a fine and penalty points and back suffers could drive un-jolted. This scheme has the added advantage of being self-financing, whilst speed humps would just be another burden to already over-taxed Council Tax Payers. Finally, may I point out that girl racers are frequently to be found in our village, particularly at school times, and they are equally dangerous.

I agree with Bad Back Sufferer yet again. The 20 mph speed limit plus PCSO with speed camera is a 21st century solution to the problem. Speed humps are a 20th century solution.

Back to more important/pressing matters.

It would appear that the 'Troublesome Trio' and their dreadful allegation have now been persuaded to retract their 'statement of lies.' All that remains now is for the young man and his family to continue their untarnished lives. I for one do not know the young man concerned but i never heard any element of doubt from anyone in the village regarding his character. If 'the primate undesirables' need a helpful finger pointing in the direction of Crediton, i for one am willing to oblige.

ps. I loike cake.

Whilst on the subject of speed humps:
When I was younger I used to do occasional work for the old commercial radio station, DevonAir. The station engineer, who shall remain nameless, also used to present the station’s motoring programme “Sidelight”. He found a good use for the speed humps on Burnthouse Lane in Exeter. These humps were big and impossible to cross without a mega jolt, even at slow speeds. Part of each “Sidelight” programme was a Road Test of a current model car, and this always involved driving up and down Burnthouse Lane at increasing speeds to test the suspension. I remember he told me that Citroen cars coped with the humps much better than other makes.

Bad Back Sufferer’s reference to overburdened Council Tax Payers prompts me to ask if anyone knows who authorised the traffic calming monstrosity at the Old Forge Garage in Rewe. In must have cost tens of thousands of pounds. I heard that just ONE person had complained about the dangers of crossing the railway bridge there.

Just a reminder folks. Commenting on matters which may still be under legal investigation can lead us all into a legal minefield.

I have some experience of this in regard to another, and far more potentially sensational case elsewhere in these islands which may well yet come to court shortly. In that case, the discussion board I was a member of had the benefit of legal advice from another member who was also a doctor of law at Glasgow University.sadly, we dont have such expertise on had here, as far as I know.

I have every sympathy with BBS. Really. But let's be realitic. PCSO's with radar guns are just not going to happen in Silverton. With just one policeman and one PCSO serving the whole of the rural area from Stoke Canon up to Bampton, the police just don't have the resources to mount speed traps in a low accident area like Silverton. They are far more likely to target black spot areas such as the A396. The drivers who refuse to comply with the current 30 mph limit are even less likely to slow down to 20 mph, so in the absence of police enforcement, there has to be some form of physical restraint. Chicanes and width restrictions can't be used on bus routes, so if not speed humps, what else is there?

I appreciate what you say, Babyblox, and realise that I am probably the only Silvertonian who hates speed humps or is at all bothered by them. I am not against speed restriction, far from it, and would love to see it enforced in Coach Road which some local drivers seem to use for Drag Racing practice. I am not at all against chicanes and width restrictions, and I am only against speed humps as they cause me pain. However, I realise I am probably onto a loser.

Finally, you did raise two points in your post which gave me pause:

1. On Saturday 18th October at around 6.00 pm I saw two female PCSOs with a radar gun just past the flashing 30 mph sign as you into Tiverton (Ashley Estate). This is what gave me my original idea. If The Devon & Cornwall Safety Partnership vans are viable, why not a PCSO with a radar gun working the area between Stoke Canon up to Bampton ?

2. You also say that “Chicanes and width restrictions cannot be used on bus routes” - this is clearly not so - or else the structure over by the Old Forge Garage at Rewe must be illegal.

To clarify BBS, what I meant was that width restrictions and chicanes are not practical if they prevent access by buses, lorries, agricultural vehicles etc, not that they are illegal. As for the PCSOs, as I said the police will use their resources in the worst blackspot areas. On Friday there were four police cars and about half a dozen policemen mounting a speed trap on the A396 between Rewe and Folly Farm so they can do it, but that is almost certainly a knee-jerk reaction to the fatal crash near there a couple of weeks ago. Silverton will remain very low on their priority list as the accident statistics are low. Police action against the speeders would be ideal but, being realistic, some sort of physical restraint is the best we can hope for. Of course DCC could install flashing speed signs like those as Ashley or requests to slow down but would they be effective?

As an alternative figure for local anger, how about the people who are seeking to install a 50 feet high wind turbine on the hill between Old Butterleigh Road and Chitterley, visible for miles in all directions. Can't say they are on my Christmas list this year. What do the rest of you think?
