On the subject of international relations, did anyone watch Questiontime this evening which was supposed to be a debate on next week's European elections. What a wasted opportunity! The EU constitution, reform of the CAP, community enlargement, the free movement of labour, the EU budget, addressing the lack of democracy within the institutions, membership of the euro ... surely these are the issues which should have been discussed. Instead we were treated to round three of the Westminster expenses debate. An important issue yes, but the past two editions of the programme have been dedicated to this issue. Surely this was an opportunity to move on and debate the issues facing the electorate next week. With representatives of the five main candidate parties for the European parliament on the platform could the producers of the show not have selected at least one question on the issues on which we are being invited to vote next week? And as for the questioner who complained that she had been told absolutely nothing about what the candidates propose if elected, all the parties have large European manifestos on their websites. I think what the questioner meant to say was that she is too lazy to read them. The information is freely available, don't blame the candidates when you can't be bothered to read it.

I didnt see the broadcast but I think it is indicative of how EU politics and elections are viewed in this country and have been since the European parliament came into existence. Euro elections have usually been treated as little more then a mid term referendum on the state of the parties at westminster and this is even more so now given the current constitutional crisis The Media is much to blame for this having usually reduced the debate about what happens in Europe to the level of Europen directives on the straightness of bananas.
