A Matter Of Training.

When we have a local brew specially produced locally for Street Market, as is the case this year with 'Carnival King, it might be an idea if bar staff at our local hostelries could point out the fact to visitors to the area who come in to order a pint of ale and it is not left to customers to do so. We have few enough local industries as it is and other local busnisses should be doing all they can to make sure that manufacturers like Exe Valley Breweries are supported.

Being able to live and / or work in a community like Silverton is a privilege and we all have a responsibility to contribute to the community to make it work. Street Market is a wonderful example of community spirit, but to work it does take a great effort and thanks must go to all those who give up their time to organise it.
To come back to the point of Tobireg’s post here, it is would be great if bar staff would point out the availability of beers brewed in the village, but it does also take an effort from customers as well to wish to support local businesses. Silverton has many local businesses, some are obvious and others are not, but if we all make a positive effort to support locally owned businesses it can have a very dramatic effect on the community. I understand that for every £1 spent with a locally owned business, an average of about 45p stays within the community, whereas if that same £1 is spent with a non-locally owned business then only about 2p stays within the community. So for those of you who support Silverton’s three pubs, a good proportion of what you spend will stay within the village and if you choose local products within that same pub then even more stays within the village – the more business that can remain local then the greater the prosperity of the community as a whole.
And to those of you who do support your local brewery, I say a big thank you and CHEERS!
